A report showed OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate at around $50 billion at the end of September, about $20 billion below earlier estimates of $68 to $70 billion. AI stocks dropped last Thursday, with Nvidia down 2.9%, Intel down 5.3% and Oracle down 5.5%, and losses also for AMD, Broadcom, Micron and CoreWeave. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.25%. The difference came mainly from accounting. Higher figures included revenue from cloud partners to compare more directly with Anthropic, while OpenAI reports net revenue, so there was no sudden drop in sales. The company also reported 77% total run-rate growth in the third quarter, with 107% in enterprise. The move shows how sensitive the AI trade is to single data points from one private company. Even with an accounting explanation behind the gap, the uncertainty around the numbers triggered selling across chipmakers and infrastructure providers, and chip stocks stayed under pressure into Friday’s close.
