August NFP day is just around the corner, and this one matters more than most. Last month the US economy lost 23k jobs when the market was expecting a gain of 80k. At 12:30 GMT this Friday, the market finds out whether the decline in July was a one-off event or the start of something. The consensus sits at 55k new jobs, unemployment holding at 4.1%, and wage growth easing to 3%. The bigger story is what sits on either side of this print. On one hand, two months of soft labor data. On the other, a hawkish Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who told markets at Jackson Hole last week that summer inflation readings do not convince him that underlying trends have improved. Now, a hike is back on the table for the first time in a while. The Fed meets 12 days later, with rates at 3.50-3.75% and inflation still running hot. Watch the US dollar, gold, and indices, they will feel it within seconds.
Following a brief retest of 52755 and EMA63, US30 recovered modestly toward EMA21. The index continues to trade between converging EMAs, indicating a potential shift into a sideways phase pending a clear breakout. A sustained hold above 52755 and EMA63 may support a move toward resistance at 53700. A break below these levels may prompt a decline toward the next support at 51600. Which scenario do you see unfolding?
